What to check
- Confirm the opener has power and try the wall control
- Check whether the remote alone is failing
- Look for a visible spring gap above the door
- Notice whether the door is crooked or unusually heavy
- Check whether the emergency-release trolley is engaged
What the symptoms can mean
If the opener strains but the door barely rises, a broken spring or counterbalance problem may be involved. If the door is crooked or jammed, a cable, roller, or track problem may be present.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop operating the door if it is visibly crooked, off track, unusually heavy, has a broken spring or loose cable, or makes severe mechanical noise. Do not loosen spring or cable hardware.
